The Unique Designs Of Perfume Bottles

Perfume bottles are not merely designed to hold the perfume inside.  They are seen as a way to market and promote the perfume itself, and as such become part of the overall brand that a particular scent is recognised for.

Some perfume bottles are simplicity itself.  Others are designed to raise the eyebrows, even though the box they come in generally hides the design until the bottle is taken out.

Top Brands In Stylish Bottles

Christian Dior’s Poison is well known for its deep purple and chunky oval shaped bottle.  Tendre Poison, which hit the market several years later, comes in a similar shaped bottle with a light green colour to it.  The other two varieties in the Poison range - Pure Poison and Hypnotic Poison – have similar shaped perfume bottles that mark them as being of this same family, but they are all individual in their own right.

Perhaps the most recognisable of all perfume bottles belongs to the creation of Jean Paul Gaultier.  His summer fragrance comes in a bottle which is shaped like a woman’s torso.

Gaultier’s other fragrance, Fragile, comes in a fairly unremarkable bottle.  Unremarkable that is, except for the fact that the top is a snow globe with a woman inside.  The idea, presumably, is to immediately capture the imagination of anyone who sees the bottle for the first time.  Capture the imagination now… and make a sale later, perhaps?

Sweet And Simple

Not all perfume bottles are designed to be elaborate however.  One of the best examples of a simple design that has become a classic is Calvin Klein’s CK One perfume.

This is presented in a simply styled bottle that has a screw top lid.  No fancy wrapping, no fanfare and no extravagant show of design.  It just goes to show there are always exceptions to the rule.

It is interesting however to note that the design of perfume bottles depends on whether the product is intended for a man or a woman.  A man’s cologne is more likely to be bottled into a no nonsense and functional style of bottle.  Perfume bottles intended for women are almost always elaborate and stylish, often including lots of curves and colours in the design.

There are a handful of products which are designed to be worn by both men and women.  In these cases the simple design fares better.  It has to appeal to both sexes, so the bottle cannot be too manly or feminine.

In short, the style of a bottle says a lot about the brand of perfume it holds.  And it can say a lot about the person who buys it too.
