Risks Of Laser Eye Treatment

Laser eye treatment is known to be a relatively safe procedure with a 95 percent success rate. Also it is a technologically advanced and a recommended way of treatment for eye impairments. Laser eye treatments have gained so much popularity over the years that more and more people are finding the laser eye surgery as a welcome alternative over wearing glasses and contact lenses.

One should mention that there are risks attached with the laser eye treatment although they are only prevalent in only 5 percent of the cases. Here are some of the common side effects or risks attached with a laser eye treatment:

Undercorrection/Overcorrection: The eye may not respond to the laser eye treatment perfectly. After the surgery, the doctor may feel that you may still need corrective lenses to get clear vision. Sometimes, there may also be a requirement for an enhanced surgical procedure to improve on undercorrection or overcorrection problems.
Eye infection: There is a very less chance of the eye becoming infected from a laser eye treatment. Nevertheless if this happens, there can be a delay in the process of healing.

Halo effect:  This is caused by an optical effect in dim light. For a brief period after treatment, you may experience seeing halos at night, but this should normalize within a week or two. The second faded image is caused by the untreated peripheral cornea. If the problem persists, you should consult with the surgeon who had conducted the laser eye treatment surgery.  It is not advisable to drive for a week when you experience this kind of problem.

Flap loss: The flap of tissue which is created during the treatment may come off if you injure or directly touch your eye within 24 hours of the operation. Exercise care while handling your eye during the first 24 hours after operation. After 24 hours, the flaps remain where they are and do not come off easily.

Dry eye problems: After the laser eye surgery, your eye may not be able to produce enough tears to keep the eye clean and moist. As such you may experience a burning sensation in the eye or an irregular blurring which can reduce your vision.  If this is really creating a problem, the doctor can prescribe an intensive drop therapy.

Though all of the above mentioned risks attached with the laser eye treatment are very much real, they are negligible. Every day thousands of procedures are carried out successfully and many are able to get their eye sight restored with the scientific miracle called the laser eye treatment.
